Vehicle: 2006 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0L, L4, MFI, DOHC, VIN D, Naturally Aspirated
Mileage: 160,000
Customer Concern: The air bag light is on with a passenger side side air bag resistance high code B1382. The customer said that the air bag light comes on at times and turns back off.
Tests: 1. Clear the code and see if it returns. If the code does not return, the problem is not happening at this time.

2. Clear any debris from under the passenger front seat. Things under the seat can come into contact with the side air bag connector and affect the connection.

3. Unplug the Passenger's Side Side Air Bag two terminal connector, it should have a Green wire and a Blue wire. Clean and secure the connector terminals, give the male terminals a little twist. Plug the connector back in and verify there is no tension on the harness that would pull on the connection, then clear the code and verify it does not return.

Tech Tips:
Vehicle: 2013 Ford Escape SE 1.6L, L4, MFI, DOHC, VIN X
Mileage: 47,000
Customer Concern: The engine will not crank over and there are multiple U-series codes setting. The owner previously had issues of intermittent stalling, incorrect interior and exterior light operation and problems with use of the keyless entry remotes.
This vehicle is not equipped with Intelligent Access (IA).
Tests: 1. Using a scan tool, perform self-test of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the Body Control Module (BCM) for service codes. Address any codes that may be received starting with Passive Anti-theft System (PATS) codes. If U-series codes are present from the BCM or PCM, note that these codes may be reflective of one of the other vehicle modules not properly powering up or having faulty ground.

2. If there are no PATS or U-series codes present from the BCM, including the possible symptom that the BCM will not communicate to the scan tool, it will be necessary to verify that the BCM is detecting the ignition switch input it receives on a Brown/Yellow (BN/YE) wire when the ignition switch is in the Start/Run position and on a Violet/Green (VT/GN) wire when the ignition switch is in the ACC/Run position.

3. If there is no power from the ignition switch, check the integrity of fuse 78 (5 amp) of the Body Control Module (BCM) and verify that the fuse has hot-at-all-times power which is fed from the #9 (50 amp) MEGA fuse of the high current Battery Junction Box (BJB). The high current BJB looks like a printed circuit board that is mounted vertically directly forward of the battery.

Confirmed Fix: Replaced High Current Battery Junction Box (BJB): There was water intrusion of the high energy BJB, causing a loss of power to fuse 78 of the BCM.
Tech Tips:
Vehicle: 2008 Kia Spectra SX 2.0L, L4, MFI, DOHC, VIN 1
Mileage: 66,182
Customer Concern: Code P1690 SMARTRA no response. We tried programming new keys, vehicle does not start.
Tests: 1. Check the immobilizer control module for power on pin 4 Pink wire, this should carry enough current to illuminate a test light bulb. Check for ground on pin 3 Black wire, it should have 0.05 V or less.

2. Check for 5 V reference from the ECM on pin 5 Green wire of the immobilizer. Check the wiring between pin 5 of the immobilizer and ECM pin 75 in connector CBG-K.

3. Check the resistance of the transponder antenna between pins 1 and 2 Pink wires with the immobilizer unplugged, it should have about 8.5Ω. If the wiring is OK, the immobilizer control module has likely failed.

Tech Tips:
Vehicle: 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 5.3L, V8, MFI, OHV, VIN T
Mileage: 58,000
Customer Concern: 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) lights blink. Trouble code C0379. Can hear the front actuator and transfer case shift motor both work.
Tests: 1. Monitor the front axle switch with a scan tool and see if it changes from unlocked to locked when pushing the button to shift to 4WD.

2. If no change, disconnect the front axle actuator and verify the Brown wire has 12 volts with the key on. If so, jump it to the Black/White wire and see if the scanner now shows the front axle switch as locked. If so, verify the front axle is locking and if it is, the front axle switch is bad. The front axle switch which is part of the front axle actuator. Replace the actuator.

3. If the front axle switch state did not show locked in step 2 then check the Black/White wire for an open. Look at the 4 wire connector in front of the under hood fuse block, then the 16 cavity connector along side the underhood fuse block. If there are any signs of rodent damage, raise the fuse block to inspect the wiring. Trace the wire all the way back to the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) if needed.

Tech Tips: The Front Axle Indicator Switch Wiring was broken at the C150 connector.
Vehicle: 2010 Lexus ES350 Base 3.5L, V6, MFI, DOHC, Eng Desg 2GRFE, Naturally Aspirated, GAS
Mileage: 67,000
Customer Concern: The radio and back up camera are not working. The evaporator core was replaced 3 months ago.
Tests: 1. Check that the reverse input signal is getting to the Display and Navigation Module at connector E62 pin 16 Yellow wire. When the shifter is in the reverse position there should be 12 volts.

2. Check the power and grounds to the Display and Navigation Module display. There should be battery voltage at connector E62 pin 1 Gray wire from the A/C CTRL PNL fuse in the Engine Room Relay Box (R/B) (engine compartment left).

3. With the ignition switch in the ON position, connector E62 pin 3 Black wire should have 12 volts from the ECU IG #1 fuse in the Instrument Panel J/B (lower finish panel).

4. When the ignition switch is in the accessory position, connector E62 pin 2 Gray wire should have 12 volts from the RADIO #2 fuse in the Instrument Panel J/B (lower finish panel).

5. The ground is connector E62 pin 10 White/Black wire; verify that there is no voltage at all times.

Tech Tips: There was a Junction Block #4 Connector that was not clipped in tight.
